WHMIS is a Canadian legislated hazardous materials awareness program. This course will teach participants the conditions under which "controlled products" can be considered harmful; introducing the main elements of WHMIS (Symbols, Labeling, Material Safety Data Sheets) the program outlines the hazards and necessary controls required to maintain a safe workplace and the participants (employee) responsibilities within the workplace.

The objective of the training session is to aid you in identifying the key elements of WHMIS and meet the generic requirements of the legislation.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the purpose and necessity of WHMIS in the workplace
  • Recognize hazardous materials in the workplace and the three main elements of WHMIS
  • Identify warning labels, six classes of hazardous materials, the symbols and classifications
  • Locate and use a material safety data sheet (MDSS)
  • Explain the general duties of the employer to train employees
  • Identify other components of WHMIS

Upon completion of this certificate course participants should be able to answer these four questions:

  1. What are the hazards of the materials used in their workplace?
  2. How do they protect themselves from these materials?
  3. What do they need to do in case of an emergency or spill?
  4. Where can they get more information about these hazardous products?
